The graph below shows changes in global food and oil prices between 2000 and 2011.

The line chart illustrates how the costs of world food and oil changed over an 11-year period starting from 2000.

Overall, it is immediately clear both of these kinds of prices increased significantly during the given period.

Looking at the chart in more detail, in 2000, global food and oil prices started at quite modest figures, with around 90 points and 30$ per barrel respectively. After undergoing some mild fluctuations during the first 7 years, oil price saw a considerable growth to reach its peak in the middle of 2008, at 130$ per barrel. At the same time, the food price index witnessed a similar upward trend to over 220 points. Over the second half of 2008, the numbers of both sectors given declined dramatically to half of their mid-2008’s figures. Surprisingly, food cost experienced a quick recovery to hit its peak at nearly 240 points while the figure for oil price ended at 100$ per barrel in 2011.
