The graph below shows the proportion of the population aged 65 and over between 1940 and 2040 in three different countries.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

The line graph compares the percentages of people at 65 years old and above in three different countries in 100 years period.

It is clear that the percentages of elderly will be much higher in 2040 than in 1940 in all three countries. Japan had the lowest percentage of elderly in 1940, but it will become the highest one in 2040 as predicted.

In 1940, there were about 9% of American aged 65 and over, compared to about 7% of Swedish and 5% of Japanese. After 1940, the percentages in the USA and Sweden increased gradually until 1990 to about 15%. in contrast, the percentage of elderly in Japan remained under 5% during this period.

In about 1995, the percentage of elderly in Sweden overtook the percentage of elderly in the USA and became the highest percentage of elderly in these three countries. All percentages of elderly in these countries will see a dramatic rise from 2030. The figure of Japan will overtake the figure in the other two counties by 2032 respectively and become the highest percentage as predicted.
