The graph below shows the quantities of goods transported in the UK between 1974 and 20202 by four different modes of transportation.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons were relevant.

The graph illustrates the transportation of the amount of goods, using different types of methods, in the United Kingdom between the years 1974 to 2002.

Overall, the quantities of goods transported by all the different means have increased. At the beginning of the time period, the most amount of goods were transported using road networks and water-ways, whereas the least amount was moved around the country utilizing rails and pipelines.

Roads seem like the most popular way of transporting stuff around the country, as it transported about 70 million tons in 1974, which reached up to 100 million tons in 2002. The water transport was almost the same as rail-transport in the beginning but the former saw a significant surge in early 1980s, then it plateaued the next two decades or so, finally it skyrocketed to above 60 million tons, the second highest after roads.

The railway network saw some decline in its transportation of goods throughout the 1980s and 1990s, however it recovered and reached almost the same level as it was in the beginning i.e. about 40 million tons. The least used method was pipelines, it transported about 5 million in 1974, however it rose steadily throughout time period until 2002, when it was above 20 million tons.
