The figure compares goods carrier by various mode of transportation in UK from 1974 to 2002.
Transport by water and rail were having unstable trend over 28 year-period. First, both transports started at the similar level of 40 million tonnes. After 1978, there was an increase sharply in using freighters to almost 60 million tonnes in 1982, but rail transportation declined relatively to 30 tonnes in 1984. However, water carriers and rail carriers increased significantly again in late-1990s, finishing at 60 million tonnes and 40 million tonnes respectively.
Looking at transportation by road, it was the most common method in UK. Even thought, there was a gradual rise in 28 years, a minor unstable trend was happened, there was a minor drop in 1994, but still the first choice of transportation in UK. Interestingly, starting at very low level, the frequency of pipeline increased gradually, levelling off at over 20 million tonnes in 1994.
In conclusion, the rank of goods transport in UK were not changed from 1974 to 2002, but all methods tend to have more usage.
