The graph below shows the quantities of goods transported in the UK between 1974 and 2002 by four different modes of transport.

The line graph illustrates the proportion of goods which were transported in the UK from 1974 to 2002 by four separate modes of transport.

Overall, the figure for goods transported by road, water and pipeline all increased over a period of time, except for the quantity of products conveyed by rail which remained almost constant at about 40 million tonnes. Moreover, goods transported by road accounted for the highest point while the transport of products by pipeline was the lowest.

As it presented in the graph, in 1974, goods transported by road made up 70 million tonnes compared to only about 5 million tonnes of products conveyed by pipeline. From 1974 to 1978, both of them increased slightly to 75 millions and approximately 7 millions respectively. From 1974, the transport of products by road went up moderately to nearly 100 by 2002 after fluctuating between 70 millions and 80 millions over a period of 20 years. Beside, between 1978 and 1982, there was a moderate growth of million tonnes of goods which were conveyed by pipeline. 16 years later, it remained constant. After that, it continued rising and reached above 20 million tonnes in 2002.

The graph shows clearly that, over a period of 4 years, the figure for products transferred by rail leveled out at 40 millions. On the other hand, the tonnes of goods conveyed by water rose sightly from 38 millions to 40 millions. Throughout the rest of the period, both of them fluctuated, however, rail transport always accounted for higher million tonnes of products than water. By 2002, rail transport reached at about 63 million tonnes compared to 41 million tonnes of water transport 's goods.
