households owning and renting accommodation in england and wales 1918 to 2011

The bar graph compares the proportion of people living in owned and rented houses in the UK for a period of about a century between 1918 and 2011.

In an overview, it can be seen that both of these categories are showing inverse changes. On one hand, percentage of owned house accommodation is increasing regularly while on the other hand, that of rented house accommodation is decreasing gradually. The maximum and the minimum proportion of people living in a rented house is during 1918 and 2001 respectively while the same period shows opposite trend for owned household accommodation.

At the start of research, in 1918 the ratio rented to owned household accommodation is nearly 3 is to 1 which ends up as 2 is to 3 in 2011. Both of these categories are at equal proportion in the year 1971 until which rented household proportions are in majority but after 1971, owned household took the lead.

In 1981, the proportion of rented household is about 77 to 78 which is an all time high for an individual category for any particular year.
