The tables compare the amount of coffee and the number of bananas purchased under the fairtrade label in five distinct nations between 1999 and 2004.
Overall, both coffee and banana sales grew in almost all five countries in Europe in 2004, as compared to those in 1999. Moreover, while the UK was ranked top in the amount of coffee purchased, Switzerland was the best country of banana sales in 2004.
In terms of coffee, the UK sold 1.5 millions of Euros in 1999. The figure then rose tremendously five years later to 20 millions of Euros. Being the second largest coffee provider, Switzerland also experienced a significant growth, climbing from 3 millions in 1999 to 6 millions in 2004. The other three European countries, however, sold only 2, 1.7, and 1 million(s) of Euro respectively in the same year, although they also witnessed moderate upward trends.
As regards to bananas, Switzerland outnumbered other European countries in the number of bananas purchased in both given years (15 millions in 1999 and 47 millions in 2004). Likewise, there were dramatic increases in the sales of bananas from both the UK and Belgium, rising from 1 million and 0.6 million in 1999 to 5.5 millions and 4 millions in 2004 respectively. By contrast, the other two countries saw moderate drops, with merely 1 million for Sweden and 0.9 million for Denmark in 2004.
