The bar chart compares the rates of students in different nations in terms of the competence in a foreign language in the year 2000.
It is clear that Indian students were most proficient in a second language. Additionally, apart from Thailand, female students were better at learning a foreign language than males in all other countries.
Regarding the figures of students having a competence in a second language in India, Romania and China, the numbers of male and female students in India were highest, standing at nearly 70% and 56%. Followed by Romania, the proportion of female learners was slightly lower than that of India, at around 65%, however the figure of males was significantly lower, at roundly 42%. At that time, China saw the lowest rates in both genders, and particularly China had over three times less male students mastering an overseas language than India.
Turning to the other remaining countries, 56% and 38% were the rates of learners being good at an abroad language in Vietnam, higher than the figures of Russia and Thailand. Meanwhile, Thailand was the only nation the percentage of male students mastering a second language was higher than that of females, a difference of 5%. Finally, Russia saw the proportions of males and females were 42% and 35% respectively.
