The diagrams provide information on how money was spent by an American average household in 1970 and in 2004.
Overall, all the expenditures split into six categories, including food, transport, entertainment, mortgage, clothing and childcare, though they are not evenly distributed. The mortgage was a significant part of families’ budget, though the share nearly doubled recently. By contrast, the Americans cut their expenses in almost each of the rest categories, excluding childcare and entertainment.
Specifically, clothing, food and mortgage were the outliers in 1970 with 22, 25 and 26 percent, respectively, followed by transport and entertainment (both at 13%). The least sum of money was dedicated to childcare (only 1%).
Whereas in 2004 half of the budget was spent on the mortgage, only 50% could be shared among other needs. The same pattern was followed in changing figures of costs on clothing and food, which halved, along with the transports’ share. Considering childcare, people started to spend significantly more, 1% in 1970 compared to 10% in 2004. Meanwhile, the most stable category was entertainment, which was never less or more than 13%.
