The table compares the average distance that one person traveled per year in eight modes in England between 1985 and 2000.

It is clear that, in general, although the distance traveled per person varied according to the mode, car was still the most popular choice in both two years.

To specify, increasing about 1.5 times from 3.2 miles in 1985, cur had still had the highest number of miles in the average traveled per person in 2000. Similarly, train and other mode were common usages in 1985 with just below 290 miles and 450 miles on the average respectively, their figures rose moderately after 15 years. Besides, although taxi was the least prevalent in 1985 with only 13 miles in the average, its figure climbed rapidly to 42 miles in 2000; however, it was still less common mode than the long-distance bus which has the pattern grew noticeablely from 54 miles to 124 miles after 15 years.

By contrast, an opposite picture can be seen in the rest of the modes. The local bus which was one of the most favorite choices in 1985 with 425 miles in the average dropped significantly by approximately 275 miles in 2000. Meanwhile, there were decreases slightly in the number of miles in walking and bicycle. Strikingly, after 15 years, bicycle remained one of less prefer choices for people in England to travel with 51 miles in 1985 and only 41 miles in 2000.
