The given table below compares the average distances in England travelled by people using different modes of transport over the period of 1985-2000.
Overall, it is clear that the miles travelled by all modes of transport increased significantly over the period. Car was by far the most used mode of travel for English.
According to the table, the distance travelled by car was 3,199 miles in 1985 and rose to 4,806 after 15 years. The miles travelled by long distance bus, train, taxi and other modes of travel also increased during the same period. However, the biggest increase encountered in the distances travelled by taxi per person that rose more than threefold, from 13miles in 1985 to 42 miles in 2000.
By contrast, the average distances travelled by walking, bicycle and local bus declined over the period. The miles travelled by walking and bicycle was 255 and 51 in 1985 and dropped by approximately 10miles in 2000 whereas the figures for local bus saw the biggest declined from 429miles to 275miles between 1985 to 2000.
In total, the average miles travelled per person in UK using all modes of transport escalated from 4740 in1985 to 6475 in 2000.
