The table below shows the proportion of income spent on 4 common items in the UK in 1998.

The table represents British income distribution to various popular components in 1998, divided by gender and age.
Overall, music occupied the largest proportion of children’ earnings whereas food was the biggest adults’ spendings.
Accounting for 39%, music was the largest components of children expenditure, in which the proportion between boys and girls were nearly the same (at 38% and 40% respectively). A similar divergence was seen in videos and food, which comprised 12% and 10% correspondingly. Despite the second largest proportion, electronic equipment witnessed the most enormous divergence among boys and girls, with 18% and 5%.
Conversely, mature people spent more on food than other items. 25% of their budget went on food, exactly four times higher than the spendings on electronic equipment and music while videos constituted merely 1%. Interestingly, except for the music in which men and women represented an equal percentage of music spendings, food followed a reversed pattern with others. It was observed that the proportion of female spendings on food tripled male ones. By contrast, men surpassed women, by exactly four times in the case of videos and ten-fold in circumstance of electronic equipment.
