The two charts demonstrate the change in sales of Fairtrade coffee and bananas in the UK, Switzerland, Denmark, Belgium and Sweden from 1999 to 2004.
It is noticeable that the consumption of coffee in the five countries had witnessed increases during the five years, while the sales of bananas had decreased in the two countries.
As we can see in the first table, in 1999, the overturn of Fairtrade coffee in Switzerland ranked on the top (3 million euros). Although its sale doubled in 2004, which turned to 6 million euros, the UK overtook its place with a surge from 1.5 million to 20 million euros. Denmark, Belgium and Sweden had minor increases in the five years, from 1.8 to 2 million, 1 to 1.7 million and 0.8 to 1 million respectively.
Looking at the second table, the sales of Fairtrade bananas in Switzerland ranked first from 1999 to 2004, with a rise from 15 to 47 million euros. The UK and Belgium also saw increases in sales in the five-year period, from 1 to 5.5 million euros and from 0.6 to 4 million euros separately. However, the consumption in Sweden and Denmark suffered falls over the years (from 1.8 million to 1 million euros and from 2 million to 0.9 million euros).
