The table shows the opening date, length of track and passenger numbers (in 2015) for six metro systems
around the world.
Overall, it is clear that the older the metro system is, the more kilometres of track it has, with the exception of
Los Angeles, which has slightly more track than Kyoto even though it was constructed last. As for passenger
numbers, the systems built in 1927 or earlier have significantly higher numbers than those built later in the
century. There is no correlation between the continents the railways are located in, and the amount of
passenger use.
The oldest underground system opened in London in 1863 and has 394 kilometres of track. Although the
Paris system opened 4 years later and has half as much route as the London system, it carries many more
passengers per year (1.5 billion as opposed to 1.3 billion). Moreover, the metro system that was built in
Tokyo a quarter of a century later has much less track (155 kilometres) than its European counterparts, but
still carries double the number of passengers, amounting to 3.2 billion. Therefore, it has the highest
passenger numbers of all six systems.
As for the underground lines built after 1976, Washington DC has the longest track (126 kilometres), which is
similar to the three earlier systems, but much lower passenger numbers (0.2 billion). However, this is twice
as many as the final two lines to be built, Kyoto and Los Angeles, which have almost an equal number of
yearly passengers (roughly 0.13 billion), and a much shorter track length (11km and 28km respectively).
