Task 1: You should spend about 20 minutes on this task. The graph below shows the proportion of the population aged 65 and over between 1940 and 2040 in three different countries. Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant. You should write at least 150 words.
The line chart illustrates the percentage of 65 years old and over citizens in USA, Sweden and Japan from 1940 to 2040.
Overall, it is noticeable that the proportion of population aged 65 and older in three countries is increasing during this period. The USA had higher percentage of mature citizens than other countries before it started declining and rank last in the last year. Furthermore, although Japan's elderly population quantity decreased slightly for the first 40 years, it rises significantly and overpasses two other countries, which used to be higher in the number of old citizens from 1940 to 2030.
As can be seen obviously, in 1940, percentages of ageing population were less than 10% for all countries. Between 1940 and 1980, while USA and Sweden went up to nearly 15%, Japan reached the bottom at about 2.5%. In the next 20 years, the old population in the USA declined gradually until 1999, at nearly 15% and kept stable for the rest of this period. Conversely, that referring to Sweden and japan have increased sharply for their last years, surpass the USA to become the highest and second highest among the total, at over 25%, which nearly 4 times higher than it used to be in initial year.
