The chart illustrates how many thousand UK citizens of both sexes were undertaking further studies whether full- time or part- time in the given 3 periods of time from 1970 to 1991.
Overall, it is clear from the hart that full – time studies showed an upward trend in males and females, while part-time studies experienced a downward trend in males and an upward trend in female students throughout the period. Both types of education system had fluctuations present. Although full-time education initially had a lower rate, however, it could never outrace the part-time education for a given period.
On the one hand, the rate of part-time studies in men was about 1 million in 1970. It slightly increased by 860 thousand in 1990. However, the figure showed a decline of almost 850 thousand by 1980. The rate of part-time education in women was around 780 thousand in 1970. Then, it rose to 800 thousand in 1980. It continued to incline steadily reaching about 1100 thousand by 1990.
On the other hand, full- time studies rate in women was about 100 thousand in 1971. Then, it rose to almost 210 thousand in 1981, and it continued to rise steadily to approximately 240 thousand in 1991. Furthermore, the figure showed a steady incline in males to about 130 thousand in 1971. It continued to go up until the end of the above-mentioned period. In 1981, it increased to almost 180 thousand and by 1991 it became around 210 thousand in rate.
