Wealthy countries should accept more refugees and provide them with basic assistance, such as food and housing. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
There is a raging debate on whether wealthy countries should accept more refugees and give them basic amenities or not. In my opinion, it is the responsibility of the developed nations to accept refugees as long as it is due to valid reasons like war, natural disasters or legal immigration. I will in the below paragraphs elucidate both sides of the argument and give a relevant example on my opinion.
Nowadays since there is a huge economic parity between the rich and poor countries it becomes the responsibility of first world countries to accept refugees from third world countries in an event of war, natural disasters. In some instances, there are countries like Syria, Yemen and Afghanistan which have been war-torn for many years and refugees from these countries have been accepted by European countries like Germany, France and Belgium on humanitarian grounds and are being provided with basic assistance like food and housing. Similarly, in the era of globalization, we see new immigration policies from countries like Canada and Australia which have opened their doors to economic refugees who want to have a better quality of life. In recent news from CBS news Canada has a roadmap for One million immigrants in the next three years.
On the other hand as instead of accepting refugees from poor or war-torn countries rich countries as a part of bigger responsibility help poor countries by offering aid and monetary packages for the economic development of developing countries. In the recent past, many countries like the United States and Britain have provided aid to African countries which have reduced the influx of refugees from these countries. In the war-torn Afghanistan United States has helped the region to stabilize by providing military aid and India, however, has helped the country by being a partner in the economic development which helped the country to generate employment. A huge influx of refugees can have a negative impact on the social fabric and change the demography of that country. Recent examples can be seen from Europe where a heavy influx of refugees from Syria have brought instability in the region.
Thus, in my opinion, looking at the various examples mentioned above wealthier countries should not only accept refugees but also help in socio-economic growth of the developing nations.
