Recent figures show an increase in violent crime among under age of 18. Some psychologists claim that the basic reason for this is that children these days are not getting the social and emotional learning they need from parents and teachers.
Statistics from the recent studies show that heinous crime is increasingly popular among the minors. Psychologists identified the failure of parents and teachers to provide the children with the necessary social and psychological skills as the main factor responsible for the recent unfortunate development. I completely agree with the opinion because today's parents spend less time with their children and schools give little attention to teaching of moral values.
The parents play an important role in child's personality development. It is quite unfortunate that most parents hardly have sufficient time to spend with children. They spend more time at work and become so much attached to their job to the point that abandoned their responsibilities as parents. For instance, from the interrogation of the juvenile delinquents , larger percentage claimed lack of parents led them to crime.
Furthermore, a growing number of research suggest that school is the most important agent of socialisation after family. It is also a place where moral values can be learnt . However, these days, the education that young people receive is imbalanced as teachers completely focus on academics at the expense of teaching of moral values. For instance , an essential subject such as Civic Education that was known for educating young students about moral values and disciplines has been expunged from the school curriculum.
In conclusion, it is undoubtedly true that incapability of the parents and teachers to teach the teenagers essential social and emotional skills are mainly responsible for the meteoric rise in the criminal activities among the youths.
