Some students prefer classes with open discussions between the professor and students and almost no lectures. Other students prefer classes with lectures and almost no discussions. Which do you prefer? Use specific reasons and examples to support your ans

The way we process information and gather knowledge from a academic class is highly dependent on how the class is being conducted which includes medium of presented materials, student teacher interaction and few more factors. Interaction in class is the main topic of this essay where some students prefer classes with discussions and others have an opposite view. Though both of them has strong arguments behind, I prefer classes with mainly lecture and almost no discussion for two reasons detailed below.

First and foremost, professor need to best utilize the class time where a particular amount of content needs to be delivered to students within a limited amount of time. This comprises the other facts like the size of class and which particular topic is being tought. For example during my undergraduate in engineering, we used to sit in a class of sixty pupils, which is a quite high number for a university level class. Managing a discussion among this number of students require the time, that is not accommodated within our class schedule. Moreover, the content of each class is designed as such that required almost the full class time to deliver only. And the topics covered in engineering have layers of logical depth which require critical thinking to understand. So in most of the cases starting a discussion in those topics cannot be possible within the class time. So it is better to let the professor utilize the time according his own plan.

Furthermore, students do have other opportunities to discuss among themselves and interact with the professor like the library and counseling hour. To better understand a topic group study is vital in higher education. Students can use their library to arrange this kind of sessions among themselves and then summarize the critical problems and their own thoughts to be discussed with the professor in the counseling hours. This way the specific discussion remain within the small group and if necessary the professor can share those details in later classes. Thus, everybody is getting equal attention in the class and proper learning is happening. Addedly, discussions, otherwise would have happened in the class to impress the professor are being prevented. As a whole students are getting more time together making some meaningful friendship and utilize their own time.

In summary mostly lecture based class is better for both the students and the professor to manage their time and utilize them in the best effective way. Hence, the professor is getting proper time to deliver the designated contents in the class and students can further dig down on those materials for fruitful discussions. For these reasons mainly I do prefer classes with mostly lecture and less discussion.
