10-W1

The passage suggests that evironmental pollution may explain the decline of sea otter. However, the lecture disagrees with it and lecture proposes the predation hypothesis.

First, the author states that there are known sources of pollution and chemical which decrease otters ' immune system against deadly infections. But the professor opposes this idea by saying that there is no dead otter body flowing on the sea shore. The pollution hypothesis cannot be the main cause. Thus, predation theory is plausible which explain the lack of dead cropse of otter.

Second, the reading passage points out that other species such as sea lions and seals are also affected but Orcas as a predator usually prey on larger animal instead of small ones. Therefore, environment can explain the decrease of entire ecosystemi. In contrast, the speaker mentions that larger animal like whales that orca prey on are disappeared due to the predation of human. As a result, orcas were forced to change their diet and start to attack sea lions , otters and seals etc. In other words, this reason is in favor of the predation hypothesis.

Third, the reading material claims that pollution is the cause of uneven distribution of sea otter. Mainly because the sea currents create uneven concentration of pollution. On the other hand, lecturer proclaims that orcas have access to some areas but they are not able to enter shallow rocky areas. In those areas which orca cannot go the population of otters remains stable. This means that the predation hythesis explains the uneven pattern of decline.
