Essay topics:

In 1912 a bookseller named Wilfrid M. Voynich acquired a beautifully illustrated handwritten book (manuscript) written on vellum (vellum is a material that was used for writing before the introduction of paper). The "Voynich manuscript," as it became known, resembles manuscripts written in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. However, it is written in a completely unknown script. To date, no one has been able to decode the script and understand the book’s content. Several theories have been proposed to explain the origin of the Voynich manuscript.

The reading asserts that there are three theories about the manuscript Wilfrid m. Voynich acquired. The theories are about the concept and date of the manuscript. The lecture, however, finds all the intentions dubious and casts doubt on the reasons presented by the reading passage.

First, the reading argues that the manuscript might have been a genuine work which was containing a complicated secret code of a sientific or magical application and due to some shreds of evidence, Anthony Ascham, a physician, and botanist, could have been the author of that. Conversely, the lecturer brings up the idea that the manuscript seems to contain consequential pieces of information, and since Ascham was an ordinary physician with no original notion, it is dubious that the manuscript had been written by him.

Furthermore, the author holds the view that there is a possibility that the manuscript has is fake with no particular meaning and had been written by Edward Kelley to used to sell books by pretending to have magical powers. In contrast, the professor underlines the fact that people at that time were easy to fool, so he did not need to write such a complex book to fool them.

Finally, the reading passage asserts that there is a theory that Voynich had written the manuscript in order to sell it as an antique book to a book dealer. On the contrary, the speaker dismisses this issue due to the fact that the modern indicator techniques illustrated that the materials that composed the book, including its ink, have 4000 years old and proved that the manuscript had been written centuries before Voynich lived.
