Essay topics:

In 1939, David O Selznick produced a film of Margaret Mitchell’s Pulitzer Prize winning novel, Gone with the Wind. The movie proved to be among the most important in the history of world cinema. To this day, in fact, it remains the American box office champion when adjusted for inflation. In 1940, the film won a record-breaking eight Academy Awards, including Best Picture. Recently, however, Gone with the Wind has increasingly come under fire due to allegations of racism in the movie. Consequently, its reputation has fallen in many critical circles.
The film tells the story of a Southern family who fight on the side of the Confederacy in the American Civil War. Scarlett O’Hara, the main character, is a slave owner whose civilization goes to war to preserve the right to own and degrade African Americans. Life before the Civil War, during the days of slavery, is depicted as a golden age.
Scarlett’s maid and confidante, Mammy, is not even given a first name in the script. Meanwhile, Butterfly McQueen, who portrayed Prissy, a house servant whom Scarlett slaps across the face at one point in the film, was told by the director to deliver a hysterical performance emphasizing the character’s dim-wittedness, speaking to age-old negative stereotypes. Civil rights activist Malcolm X wrote of his embarrassment seeing Butterfly McQueen’s performance as Prissy that it made him want to crawl under the rug of the theater.
For all of these reasons, when watching Gone with the Wind today, modern viewers cannot help but feel admiration for how far the movie industry has come since its infancy. There is much to be embarrassed about in the early days of Hollywood films.

The article states that movie called 'Gone with the Wind' was proved to be among the most immportant movie and this movie won many record breaking awards. However, this film increasingly comes under critisism of racism in the movie and its repuration has fallen and gives three reasons of support. However, professors states that this movies is very important for cinema. He gives an example of scholars that they suggested that this movies has been largest seen movie around the world and refutes all reasons.

First, the reading passage states that main character of film was a slave owner whose civilization goes to war to preserve the right to own and degrade African Americans. It also states that life before and during the days of slavery depicted as a golden age. However, the professor refute this reason by saying that south was never right before war. They told that before and during war was a golden age but according to professor, there was no romance in family before war. Also condition of woman became good after war.

Second, the article states that civil rights activist Malcolm X wrote of his embarrassment seeing Butterfly McQueen’s performance as Prissy that it made him want to crawl under the rug of the theater as she slaps Scarlett and potraying as dimwittedness and age-old negative stereotype. However, the professor refute this by saying that his charater plays important role and prove to be a awarding winning performance. Female character of African Amrican woman won best supproting role award and she played that role with a dignity and heart.

Finally, the reading passage states that because of these reasons, viewers saw that and feel admiration for how far the movie industry come since its infancy and people embarrassed of early days of hollywood films. However, the professor refute this by saying that this movie increase job opportunity of black actors-actress. Many African American became a part of film industry and because of this movie future of African American people changed.
