The reading material is talking about reasons of why a burning mirror has never actually been built by Greeks as a weapon. Yet, the professor believes that all these reasons are not convincing.

First off, the author’s opinion is that to set fire on ships, the mirror must be meters wide and in a precise parabolic curvature, which is impossible to the technological level of the Greece at that time. Nevertheless, the professor argues that the mirror need not to be a single piece of polished copper. Using a lot of pieces of polished copper to form a parabolic shape can also made a burning mirror. In this way, building burning mirror will be possible for the Greeks.

Secondly, the writer uses the consequence of an experiment that set a wooden object on fire will take ten minutes of the burning mirror, which makes the mirror be ineffective and impractical in the war. Nonetheless, the professor opposes that. It is true that wood is difficult to be set on fire by mirror, but Roman ships also have a water-proof substance, pitch, which can be set on fire by the burning mirror in seconds. In this situation, fire will spread to wood on the boat. Therefore, burning mirror did have practical value.

Finally, the article shows that flaming arrows at that time had the same effect as burning mirror, so there is no reason for the Greeks to build burning mirror. However, the professor opposes that. She points out that Roman soldiers on the ships are familiar with flaming arrows and ready to put out the fire that might be caused by them. In the opposite, burning ray from the mirror cannot be seen, and the fire set by the burning mirror is hard to be noticed. Hence, attack of the burning mirror is far more surprising that of the flaming arrows, which makes it a more effective weapon.

To summarize, there is enough conditions for the Greeks to build burning mirror and use it to set fire on Roman ships.
