4-day workload vs 5-day worklaod
The reading passage and the lecture are both about work hours of employees. The passage hold the idea that a 4-day workweek is better for employees that a 5-day one. The lecturer challenges this point. He believes that employees should work for 5 days a week for multiple reasons.
First of all, the author of the reading assumes that reducing workload is in the benefit of the company itself given that employees are willing to take lower salaries. The reading passage mentioned that employees will be more rested and their productivity will increase in turn. In addition, number of employees will increase for the same amount of money, ensuring better quality of work. The lecturer casts doubt on this point of view. He thinks that companies will spend more money in order to pay for newer employees’ training, medical care, extra offices and PCs.
Secondly, the author contends that a 4-day workload is beneficial to the community as a whole. For instance, it will help in reducing unemployment. The lecturer, on the other hand, posits that there are other consequences that are more probable to happen. For example, some of the employees might as for overload because they are in need for extra money. Moreover, employees might be expected to finish the same amount of work, which entails that the company won’t recruit new workers.
Finally, regarding the welfare of employees’ lives, the author predicts that they will have better lives and will enjoy more free time. The lecturer argued this idea. He claims that employees’ may experience unstable job, or even to lose their jobs as a result of a potential economic crisis.
