Advantages and disadvantages of imposing high taxes on cigarettes and unhealthy foods.
The passage and the talk both discuss the consequnces of imposing taxes on cigarettes and unhealthy foods from governments. The writer contends that making these taxes have many beneficial results not only for the people who use these kind of substances, but also for whole society. The lecturer, however, refutes the author's assessments. She demonstrates three reasons to cast doubt on the claims made in the reading.
The first allegation of the script against which the orator argues is that paying high taxes results in decreasing cigarettes usage and it will have the same consequence on consuming unhealthy foods. In contrast, the professor highlights the fact that they not only will not use less cigarettes but also they will purchase cheaper ones which have much more detrimental effect on their health. Therefore, it makes more health risk to people who are smoking. She further asserts that continuing to use junky foods and paying high taxes, people will not have enough money to purvey more healthy foods.
Secondly, according to the text, getting serious health conditions, these people inflict laborious expenses on the government, and this will not be fair if other people's money spend on remedy these people; although the speaker finds this idea debatable. She bolsters her opinion by stating that high taxes will be unfair too, because when two people of different income want to buy a same cigarette, the one who has a lower revenue will be affected more than the other, since they could not afford these taxes as well as others.
Lastly, the lecture contradicts this fallacy of the passage that entire society will benefit from spending this money on public welfare, saying that governments will be dependant to this income, and as a result they will not enact laws to prevent consuming these kind of stuff, for instance they will not ban smoking in public areas.
