Asteroids are large space objects made of rock and ice. There are hundreds of thousands of asteroids in our solar system. Though we often hear ideas about establishing colonies of humans to live and work on our Moon or our neighboring planet, Mars, some t

The reading and the lecture are both about establishing a colony in asteroids. The author of the reading believes that asteroids are the best place to establish a human colony for various reasons. The lecturer casts doubt on the claims made in the article. He thinks that the maintaining a colony in asteroids is not a practical idea by providing various reasons.

First and foremost, the lecturer points out that the asteroids are the best option to establish colony because of low gravity and reduced in size when compared to moon. It is also mentioned that because of less gravity which lead to a safer landing on asteroids. The professor is challenged by this point. He says that landing on asteroids involves various risks. Furthermore, he argues that people working on asteroids will develop certain health risks which involve loose muscle mass and bone density loss.

In addition to that, the article contends that there are valuable elements metals available in asteroids which cold sold for profitable price which involves mining. It is mentioned that the business that wants to make money out of precious metals that could sponsor for mining to be done in asteroids. The lecturer rebuts this argument. He says Cost of supporting equipment to support colony will be very expensive as it will incur transporting costs as well. Moreover, there is no guarantee that precious metals will be selling for higher price because if it is found abundantly, then it could lead to lower price.

Last but not least, the article states that it is easier to travel to asteroid as many number of asteroids come closer to earth's orbit more often. So, it will be easier to commute to asteroids to and fro. The lecturer, on the other hand posits that it is true some asteroids come closer to the earth's orbit and after a while it moves farther back which will make returning trip much longer than trip to asteroids. The professor establishes that the returning trip would be much farther than the mars if the orbits moves away from the earth's orbit.
