Buying a Franchise

Essay topics

The speaker starts by citing a study that questions the decision of many people to buy a franchise business. While the passage argues that buying a franchise might be a good bargain, the author attacks the passage on the basis of three points.

First of all, the passage states that finding a reliable supply is a big headache for the business owner. Hence buying an existing franchise can mitigate those problems because most franchising companies have a reliable partner. Even though the speaker concedes that they do not have to search for suppliers, she states that it might constrain the business owner. She shares a specific example where even though the price of equivalent raw materials is less, the owners are not allowed to change it.

Second of all, the passage claims that buying a franchise can save some money on advertisement. But the lecturer claims that even though franchise owners spend around 6% in the advertisement, the generally advertise the products they sell but not the actual franchise. Hence she says that such advertisement might not be beneficial for new franchise owners.

Finally, the passage states that a franchise would add more security and more stability. However, the professor claims that it would be more beneficial for new people to buy an existing independent business rather than a franchise. She that buying an independent business will cost twice as less as buying a franchise. Moreover, according to the lecturer, an already successful business would provide better stability in comparison to a franchise.
