Cane toads

Essay topics:

Cane toads

The reading and the lecture are both about methods in how people could prevent cane toads from spreading. The author of the reading believes that it is easy to block cane toad from spreading in Australia. The lecturer casts doubt about the claims made in the article. She thinks that it is not an easy task to obstruct cane toad from spreading.

First of all, the author points out that by constructing a national fence is one way to obstruct cane toads from spreading. He/She states that this fence will not enable them from moving to other places in Australia. This point is challenged by the lecturer. She argues that cane toads can put their eyes in streams, and young toads could be navigated to the other side of the river. Furthermore, she says that they will be able to establish new individuals and spread in the other side of the river and the national fence could not be efficient.

Secondly, the author contends that toads could be caught by volunteers. He/She asserts that they can easily be caught by using traps and people can caught by hands. The lecturer rebuts this argument. She suggests that these volunteers are not trained enough to deal with toads. She elaborates on this by mentioning that those volunteers can harm frogs in Australia, so it is not an effective idea.

Finally, the author states that scientists are making a disease that hold a virus that can limit the total number of the cane toad. The article notes that this virus will be exclusively designed for toads, and it will not be severe for almost all kinds of animals. The lecturer, on the other hand, posits that creating a disease will not solve the problem effectively. She puts forth the idea that some toads are going to be transported to south America and this could cause an ecological issues because the toads are carrying out the disease with them, and I could spread in America, which a massive obstacle.
