cave painting of Lascaux

Essay topics:

cave painting of Lascaux

The passage presents some persumably possible support for the speculation that the Lascaux cave paintings were purposed to secure a successful hunt. The lecturer, however, refutes all the arguments that are presented in the reading, and he claims there is no factual evidence confirming this hypothesis. His further demonostrations are as follows.

Firstly, although some of the animal subjects of the Lascaux paintings were the hunting prey of people at that time, many of them did not fall under that category; such as Rhinasors or cats. Additionally, according to evidence, the most frequently hunted animal at that time was raindeer, which was not depicted in the Lascaux paintings at all. Moreover, only a small number of animal images were portrayed wounded by arrows or spears. Hence, the connection of the paintings with hunting cannot be observed.

Secondly, while the drawings of humans with animal heads were indeed present in the Lascaux, the association of these paintings with hunting cannot be inferred from this fact, as the aformentioned human figures were not hunting in the pictures, or even standing up. In fact, the humans with animal heads depictions were lying on their backs as if they were sleeping. Thus, the purpose of these paintings has not been identified yet.

Finally, whereas it is true that depictions could possess magical influences in the eyes of ancient communities, their relations to hunting cannot be readily concluded. Some populations used to believe that their ancestors' spirits are present in animals. Therefore, by making the Lascaux cave paintings of animals, they may have been striving to perform rituals and connect to their past.
