Essay topics:

The “comics medium” includes newspaper comic strips such as Dennis the Menace and comic books such as Spider-Man. Scholars around the world agree that comics are a uniquely American art form.

The first commercially successful comic strip was Hogan’s Alley, a comic strip from the 1890s. Hogan’s Alley featured the Yellow Kid, the world’s first popular cartoon character. This strip and its character marked the beginning of comics and was American in every respect. Set in a low-income neighborhood in New York City, Hogan’s Alley dealt with the lives of ordinary Americans. It was written and drawn by American cartoonist R.F. Outcault. Joseph Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearst, two famous and influential American publishers, printed the comic strip in their newspapers.

The first popular comic book in the world was also American. Action Comics, a series that is still in print today, was initially released in 1938. It featured Superman, the world’s first superhero. Like Hogan’s Alley, Superman was American-created.

Americans invented comic strips, and Americans have exported their unique art form to the rest of the world. Japanese comics, called manga, were inspired by the comics that Americans brought to Japan after World War II. Popular European comics series such as Smurfs and Asterix are influenced by Disney comic books. Today, American-created Disney comic characters are more popular in Europe than ever.

The comics medium started in America. While it has spread around the world, even comics that aren’t created by Americans have an undeniable American influence. This is why so many art and literature scholars recognize the comic strip as a truly American art form.

The passage proposes the idea that comic is a unique art form from America. It states that the first commercially successful comic book is Hogan’s Alley, written by Outhaul, the comic is about the low-income neighborhood in the New York City. Additionally, the text claims that the first popular comic book is Action Comic, which is the story that introduced the Superman for the first time. Moreover, the text also believes not only Japanese Manga is hugely influenced by American comics that brought to Japan after world war two but also the European famous cartoon such as Asterix and Smurfs heavily influenced by Disney cartoon. For instance, the character shows a similarity of the character. All the stated reason supports the idea of a comic is an art from America. In the other hand, the lecturer refutes this claim with several explanations that I would like to elaborate in the next paragraph.

First, the Hogan’s Alley is not the first successful comic book. The most financially advantageous comic is from 1970’s Britain and Switzerland comics. Whereas the Hogan’s Alley written in 1890’s. Furthermore, the writer of Hogan’s Alley is actually an immigrant from Hungary, not American. Therefore, the idea of comics comes from the United States is wrong.

Second, the first well-known comic book is TinTin series, created in Belgium, and produced in 1922, the comic is very famous around the globe. Albeit the statement that Action Comics is the first popular comics is not true since it produced 16 years later from TinTin. Additionally, the writer of Action Comics is a Canadian not American.

Lastly, the Japanese manga and European comic were based on their respective culture instead of American. The manga project an Asia tradition without much influence of American lifestyle. European Disney writers created the European comics such as Smurf and Asterix thus it did not have a connection with American Disney.
