Communal Online Eancyclopedia x Traditional Printed Encyclopedia

The reading passage and the lecture are about the communal online and the traditional printed encyclopedias. The author of the reading states that online encyclopedia have many flaws when it compares with the printed ones, but the lecturer does not agree. She says that online encyclopedia has been prejudice by ignorance and questions all three points presented.

First of all, the reading passage points out that online information is not as right as in printed ones, because is not collected by experts. Yet, non academic people can make changes. The lecturer questions this claim. She observes that both types of encyclopedias cannot be perfect, but the on-line has the advantage of tracking errors and easily correcting them. While printed ones remains with their mistakes for decades.

Secondly, the text contends that online version it is more exposed to hackers, that can create and delete information. The professor confirms this fact, but notes that online encyclopedias have some ways to protect their material. The first way is to make their crucial information in read only format, so no one can change it. Another way is by having specialised editors finding changes and eliminating malicious content.

Finally, the author explains that online encyclopedia’s content, focus on trivial and popular information, creating a false impression about what it is really important. The professor still opposes the argument. She remarks that traditional encyclopaedia have limited space, so the content chosen by the academics to fit in this space may not reflect what people wants to know. In contrast, the online version does not have this limitation providing more diversity of information, wich is the strongest advantage of this model.
