The author in the reading claims that the communal online encyclopedia has several critical problems which makes it less reliable than traditional encyclopedias; however, the professor in the lecture disagrees: it is a tactic to reduce the fame that online encyclopedia has gained rapidly over the traditional encyclopedias.
First, the author states that the contributions are made by people who often lack academic knowledge, therefore making it inaccurate and unreliable. The professor refutes the author's claim: Any factual data can never be 100% accurate, whether it be online or offline. Moreover, online mode makes it easier to correct the information, while it becomes impossible to correct the data in the offline encyclopedia once it is published.
Second, the author says that hackers can tamper with the data, making it an unreliable source for consuming information. Once again, the lecturer disagrees. She goes on to say that the crucial factual information has been converted to a 'read-only format' which cannot be edited by anyone. Additionally, they have hired editors who constantly keep track of the changes made to it and eliminate any inaccurate data that is been inserted.
Finally, the author asserts that the online encyclopedia considers trivial information to be as important as academic content. People can't differentiate between important and unimportant information. However, the lecturer says that it is the main advantage of the online encyclopedia. The traditional encyclopedia has limited space; therefore, they need to decide which information is important and which is not. But in the online encyclopedia, there is no limitation of space and contains diversified content which caters to a wider range of audience than the traditional one.
