Copper scrolls
The reading passage and the lecture have conflicting opinions about whether or not the copper scrolls discovered near the dead sea in Israel contained instructions to locate a treasure. The article argues that the story in the artifact is merely fiction and a work of imagination. On the other hand, the speaker in the lecture strongly delineates that the copper scrolls point to treasures in Egypt, not in Israel, and they were inaccurately translated.
To begin with, the author claims that the manuscript is in an ancient Hebrew language which is difficult to translate since there are no similar documents found to compare and surmise the correct translation. As a result, the translated version is full of errors, which could be by mistake or on purpose. The lecturer, however, indicates that the language was a mixture of Hebrew with Egyptian numbers and also there were systematic deliberate mistakes to render the writing only understood under the eyes of certain people.
Secondly, the writer mentions that the scrolls reported about an amount of gold and silver so vast that it seems impossible to actually exist. Moreover, the document was supposedly written by the Qumran sect who were not known for greed. In fact, they were famous for their disregard for worldly possessions. In contrast, the lecturer brings up the fact that a scholar named Robert Feathers was able to identify the Egyptian numbers and hence, was capable of getting the correct translation which reflected a lesser amount of gold that is more believable. Furthermore, the lecturer points out that the author of the document is probably an Egyptian scribe since Egypt had presence in this region around the time the scrolls were made.
Lastly, according to the excerpt, some treasure hunters have determined few locations for the gold but after digging, they found nothing which indicates that the copper scrolls were either an ancient joke or a map for a treasure which has long been dug up and carted away. The lecturer, In contrast, offsets this point by declaring that the places for the treasure were at the city of Amarna in egypt, not in Israel, and yes, most of the treasures have been found and put in museums or purchased by private collectors.
