the decline of bird populations

Essay topics:

the decline of bird populations

The reading and the listening materials have a conflict of opinions about the reasons for the decline of bird populations in the United States. In the reading passage, the author explains three factors which have a bad influence on the bird populations. On the other hand, the speaker holds an opposite view about these factors.

First of all, the writer in the passage describes that the human population decreases the natural habitats of birds. Because they destroy the bird's habitat to make space for their offices, malls, and houses. In contrast, the professor makes it clear that this action of people has an impact on some birds and many of birds continue their lives in the city. Therefore, the view of the author is not correct and the population of some species increases.

Second, the reading passage expresses that agriculture activities also decrease the bird populations because increasing human population has this impact. However, the professor disagrees with this opinion. She believes that in the United States, farmers try to produce more crops on the small land and it means that they use the productive plants which produce more food.

As a final point, the author in the passage thinks that the chemical pesticides have an important role to decrease the bird populations. Because these pesticides are eaten by pests which they are the food of birds so that it has a consequence on the bird's reproduce. By contrast, the lecturer in the listening refers to this fact that today people know about the impact of these pesticides so that they use less or use new materials which do not have a bad influence on the bird. In addition, farmers use new crops with genetically designed which not attractive for pests so that it decreases the amount of using pesticides.
