declining of yellow cedars
Both passage and lecture discuss the declining of the yellow cedar, a common tree species in North America during more than a century before now. The reading provides some hypotheses explaining this declining and in the contrast, the professor denies each of these hypotheses. He states that all assumptions are insufficient and there are not exact and true knowledge about the reason of declining such tree.
First, the reading talk about the probably attack of tree by insect parasites, specifically the carder bark beetle. It claims that they eat wood and there are much reported attack of them to this kind of tree. In the opposite the professor refutes this by saying that yellow carder tree have a chemical which act as poisoner for beetles and other insects. These insects will be killed by this chemical which is the reason of finding many beetles around the tree.
Second, according to passage another good candidate for such declining is brown bears. They ate the tree bark by clawing at the cedars. It states that the cedar bark prepared sugar as much as wild berries. The professor disagrees with this by saying that many yellow cedars extinct at some areas without existence of any bears, so it is impossible to think about bears as the cause of decreasing the number of cedars.
Third, the reading provides another factor which is a good candidate for declining of cedar in its opinion, graduate change of climate. This factor influence on the root systems of cedar, start growing in the late winter and following harm of frozen climate. The professor refutes this by explaining that the reading does not consider an important factor, lower revolution. He says that warm climate is more detrimental and harmful for cedar trees in comparison to freeze climate, so it is an evidence which denies this hypothesis.
