Do whales use stars to navigate?

According to the professor, when an animal migrates following a straight line, it definitely uses some external factor to get hints, but, the point is that, the external agent can be earth's magnetic field. Whales have a part in their brains, called "bio-magnetite", which function is to sense the earth's magnetic field. Thus, it is probable that the whales use this ability to find their path.
Finally, the passage argues that whales coming to the water surface, and staying for a long period, called ''spy-hopping", is a sign of their using of stars to navigate. On the contrary, the lecturer declares that there is no relation between spy-hopping and using stars to navigate. According to the lecturer, there are another animals such as sharks that has habit of spy-hopping. May be the animals do so in order to find their prays.
