The text and the lecture offer two opposing view on whether humpback whales use stars to navigate or not. While the text lists reasons to whales ability to find their migration path by stars, the professor repudiates the given causes, though describing the whales' ability to migrate as attractive.
First, the author mentions whales' brain power as a cause for their ability to navigate by stars. However, the lecturer refutes any connection between whales' intelligence and using stars as hints in navigating. The professor adds that some birds, e.g. ducks, navigate through stars, though it is agreed upon by the scientists that ducks are not such intelligent. Therefore, an animal's navigating by stars has no significant connection with its brain power.
Next, the reading passage claims that whales navigate by stars because they follow a straight line while migrating. On the other hand, the professor casts doubt on this argument by saying that whales can implement earth's magnetic field to find their routes. According to the professor, when an animal migrates following a straight line, it definitely uses some external factor to get hints, but, the point is that, the external agent can be earth's magnetic field. Whales have a part in their brains, called "bio-magnetite", which function is to sense the earth's magnetic field. Thus, it is probable that the whales use this ability to find their path.
Finally, the passage argues that whales coming to the water surface, and staying for a long period, called ''spy-hopping", is a sign of their using of stars to navigate. On the contrary, the lecturer declares that there is no relation between spy-hopping and using stars to navigate. According to the lecturer, there are another animals such as sharks that has habit of spy-hopping. May be the animals do so in order to find their prays.
