Dodo is an extinct bird that once originated on the island of Mauritius, which is located in the east of Madagascar. In response, several theories about the cause of their extinction have been formed.

Upon their arrival, the sailors needed food and supplies for their further exploration, and dodo birds were good targets. Since dodo birds did not know how to fly and had no fear of humans, they were easy to capture. Moreover, as the records did not criticize the taste of dodo birds, it is likely to believe that dodo birds were not a bad source of food.
Second, the newly introduced species in Mauritius could have been the cause. According to records, the sailors who landed on Mauritius brought with them several foreign animals such as pigs, dogs, and macaques. As these foreign animals needed prey to feed on, they hunted down the dodo birds, which were easy targets due to their flightless characteristic. In addition, they also preyed on dodo birds' nests, making the dodo birds unable to maintain their species.
The third theory refers to the loss of resources and habitats. At first, the island of Mauritius was an unexplored land before the Dutch sailors settled in. However, the island became commonly known among people as soon as Mauritius was found, which led Mauritius to be colonized by many other settlers. This put dodo birds into significant threat since the limited natural resources were harvested for colonization. Consequently, the dodo birds ended up with deficient resources and habitats to maintain their survival, leading to the extinction of the species.
The reading passage and the lecture offer opposing vies regarding the extinction theories of the dodo birds. While the author of the passage presents three theories to describe the extinction of those birds, the professor in the lecture refutes those as these evidences are vague.
To begin with, the author of the article argues that Dutch sailors lived on the dodo birds, and hence those birds have gone extinct. While it is stated in the article that dodo birds could not fly and had no fear of humans, the professor in the lecture claims that they were fast runner. Those birds used to live in places, according to the lecture, that were inaccessible for the sailors which made it difficult for the Dutch sailors to catch them. Moreover, those Dutch sailors lived there temporarily, and they moved on to the Subafrican continent, which means they could not be the cause of extinction of those birds.
Secondly, the writer of the article suggests that foreign animals introduced by the Dutch sailors to the Mauritius caused the extinction of dodo birds. He states that those foreign animals feed on dodo birds as they were easy target for their inability to make fly. However, the professor is of the opinion that the dodo birds were strong species which were omnivorous. He claims that those birds expanded their food source as they started to make those foreign animals their new prey.
Finally, the professor in the lecture argues against the idea of the passage that the dodo birds went extinct as the Dutch settlers destroyed the resources and habitats of those birds. He believes that those birds were adaptable creatures, and they continued to thrive even seventy years after the settlement of the Dutch, which means they adjusted themselves with the changed environment by altering their diet habit.
