As early as the twelfth century A.D., the settlements of Chaco Canyon in New Mexico in the American Southwest were notable for their "great houses," massive stone buildings that contain hundreds of rooms and often stand three or four stories high. Archaeo

The reading passage and the lecture are both about the "great houses" of Chaco Canyon in New Mexico in American Southwest. The author of the reading feels that there are three possible explanation about these large buildings. The lecturer challenges each of the points made by the author. He is of he opinion that the explanations provided about the Chaco great house are not convincing.

First of all, the author believes that these great houses are residential buildings providing houses for hunderds of people. It is mentioned in the passage that these buildings are similar to the famous 'apartment buildings' of Taos, new Mexico, which were also residential. However, the professor suggests that these buildings indeed looks like residential apartments for outside but not from inside. Moreover, he says that there are no or very few fire places for for cooking.

Secondly, the author contends that these buildings were used for storing food. The passage mentions that maize was one of the main crops of Chaco people, so they used the great houses for storing the food for longer supply. The specific theory is challenged by the author. He claims that the evidences of great houses being used for food storage are not persuasive. He says that archaeological excavations have not found any proof of maize or maize contained there. Therefore, these buildings were not used for storage.

Finally, the author in the last theory says that these buildings were used for ceremonial place. In the passage, it is said that many broken pots have been found in a building called Peublo Alto. The lecturer rebuts the theory by stating that more excavations found a lot of construction material nearby the houses. He elaborates on this by bringing up the point that these pots might belong to the construction workers who used it for cooking.
