employees typically work five days a week for eight hours each day

Essay topics:

employees typically work five days a week for eight hours each day

The reading and the lecture are both about offering employee the option to work four days instead of 5 day, like they usually do so far. Whereas the author of the reading states that it would be beneficial for the economy as a whole and for the employee who take 4 days as well, the professor suggests that it won´t bring those benefits that in the reading is stated. The lecture casts doubt on the main points made in the reading by providing three reasons.

First of all, according to the reading, companies’ profit should be increase because employee will feel more rested and alert, thus they won´t made a mistake while they are working. However, the lecturer disputes this point. He says that companies will spend more money since their will have to hire more workers and training them. Furthermore, he says that companies will have to buy more computers and built more offices.

Secondly, the reading states that unemployment rate would decrease as business could need more employee to take the time left for the workers who take the four days plan. Nevertheless, the lecturer refuses this argument. He argues that hiring a new worker would be more costly. In addition, he says that companies could offer to those employees work more hours to improve their salaries. By the way, the work environment would be unpleasant.

Finally, the reading claims that employees, who decided to take four days work, would get a better quality lives. On the other hand, the lecturer believes that getting a better life is in risk. He thinks that business won´t promote people who do not work five days, because they will need people full time to manager the work.
