The reading passage proposes three theories to explain the mass extinction which happened at the end of the Triassic period 200 million years ago. However, the professor thinks that the three theories are not good enough to explain the extinction and points out their limitations.

The first theory points out that the decline of sea level may destroyed the ocean species that lived in the shallows and land species that lived on the coast, which broke the food chain and resulted in mass extinctions. But the professor argues against it by saying that these species are able to adapt to gradual changes of the environment. Since the sea level has changed gradually through millions of years, this is not the reason for mass extinctions.

The second theory thinks that the sulfur dioxide released by the volcanoes caused massive climate cooling, which led to mass extinctions. But the professor says that sulfur dioxide will combine with water and falls down as rain. It only takes a few years for extra sulfur dioxide in the climate to fall down as rain. It is impossible for sulfur dioxide to cause such mass extinctions.

The third theory suggests that asteroid strike may be a possible explanation because the displaced debris is thrown up into the atmosphere and block out sunlight for many months or even longer, which makes the plants die and animal species starve. But the professor points out that the crater they found was 12 million years earlier than mass extinctions. This theory can't explain the time of mass extinctions.
