In view of the reading, the author enumerates the possibilities for eliminating more than half of all living species in short time about 200 million years ago by pointing out three reasons of support. Finding the statements arguable, the lecturer casts doubt on the claims made by the article and presents pieces of evidence in contrary.
At first, the author argues that the decrease in sea level as an idea which may be caused this extinction. The author believe that obliteration of the habitats near the coast caused the decrease of the species and therefore the food chains in all over the world has been affected by this, so the extinction occurred. Conversely, the lecturer brings up the idea that although the sea level was decline in this period, the species of near coast and shallow water are more capable to adopt in environmental changes. Hence, it is conceivable that it could never have an effect on extinction.
In addition, the reading passage holds the view that so cool was the weather by increasing the amount of SO2 that no one can deny the result was extinction. On the other hand, the lecturer disputes this point by clarifying the fact that increasing the SO2 was related to a short time and it should be mixed by the H2O in the atmosphere and fall back to the ocean, so in no way was it possible to caused the extinction.
Finally, the author asserts the collision of asteroids with earth and create debris which imposed the ban of sunlight as the last point for supporting the possible reason for the extinction. The lecturer, though, dismisses it by elucidating that very few scientists accept this theory since the time could not match with any collision of asteroids which have been recorded. The more near time of asteroid collision is related to million years before this extinction and it is not feasible to have effect on extinction.
