At the end of the Triassic period 200 million years ago, there was a mass-extinction event that caused the extinction of more than half of all living species. It was this extinction event that allowed dinosaurs to become the dominant species for the next

Based on the given materials, the article as well as the lecture discusses a mass-extinction which occurred at the end of Triassic period and had viable influences on the existence of most living species, except dinosaurs. Beside lacking of researcher's knowledge about the possible reasons for this phenomenon, the author states that there are several theories regarding to this extinction. That being said, the lecturer provides several ideas to repudiate this claim.
Initially, the author says that close to the end of Triassic period, there were seen noticeable decrease in sea levels, which led to influence on ecosystem of coastal and shallow-ocean species. It extremely affected food chains, which count as a possible reason of this extinction. However, the lecturer explains that this cannot be true owing to the fact that although the mentioned species were adaptive to such conditions, decreasing in the sea level should happen suddenly to surprise them, and have significant effects on their existences. In addition, fluctuation of the sea level was occurred during several million years which means that not too rapid to count as the extinction's reason.
Second, the writer proclaims that another explanation for the extinction is changing in climate; large amounts of sulfur dioxide which had been released after volcanic activities, led to lower in global temperatures, and as a result, many species could not survive in the new environment. Yet again, the speaker underscores that she agree with the more the SO2, the less the global temperature, but it cannot count as a major reason owing to the fact that during short periods of volcanic activities, there were still a lot of SO2 in the atmosphere; excess amounts of SO2 had to be removed from atmosphere in several years by combining with water and falling back by rains. So, a lot of volcanic activities did not stay long enough to change the whole global temperatures, as a reason of the extinction.
The final point of contention between the reading and the listening passage is an asteroid event. The author thinks that displaced debris, which had been dropped up by crashing of an asteroid to the earth, may have blocked sunlight, and led to death of most plants and animal species. On the other hand, the speaker explains that very few scientists agree with this claim, because no one found any asteroid creators beside pinpoint of the event. In addition, it had been found a creator which was for 12 million years before than extinction. So, it cannot be a reliable evidence of asteroid effect as the major reason of the extinction.
