At the end of the Triassic period 200 million years ago, there was a mass-extinction event that caused the extinction of more than half of all living species. It was this extinction event that allowed dinosaurs to become the dominant species for the next

The reading states that at the end of Triassic period 200 million years ago, an event of mass extinction occurred in a very short duration of time and gives reasons for the support. However the professor explains that although the reasons may seem plausible but they are not good enough to justify the mass extinction in such a short period. Thus, She refutes each of the author’s reasons.
First, the article supports the claim by the theory of decline in sea level which disturbed the habitats of the shallow water and land species in the coastal areas. This adversely affected the food chain causing mass extinction. The professor challenges this point by stating that at the end of the Triassic period, the decline in sea level was gradual. As the animals were capable of adaptability to the environmental change, they would have adapted to the gradual fall in sea level. Thus, the professor thinks that there had to be a sudden change to cause such a widespread impact on the species.
Secon, the reading avers another theory of massive climate cooling caused by the volcanic activity. The professor rebuts this argument by saying that although volcanic activity releases SO2 in the atmosphere, it stays there for a very short period. The excess So2 is cleared as it reacts with water vapour in the atmosphere and falls back on the surface as rain. Thus, to cause climate cooling, SO2 is required to stay in the atmosphere for a long duration which didn’t happen.
Finally, the author claims that the soil and crushed rocks displaced by the asteroid craters blocked the sunlight. Consequently, the plants died and the animals starved. The professor disagrees with this and says that there is no evidence of the asteroid crater in the region of extinction. However, there was one asteroid crater discovered at another location which was formed 12 million years before the extinction. This period is too long for the extinction to have any relation with it.
