Essay topics: The emperor Claudius of Rome ruled an empire spanning three continents between 41 and 54 CE. His reign was of massive importance to the history of ancient European civilization. In fact, the emperor was among the most innovative, fair, and wise in all Roman history. However, because Claudius suffered from physical handicaps and spoke with a stutter, ancient authors were biased against him. Consequently, their descriptions of his time in power are almost uniformly hostile, and many ancient historians ignore all of the good that he did.
Claudius’s reign was important for its major innovations. He conquered the island of Britain and incorporated it into the Roman Empire. He also built a new harbor for Rome and oversaw the construction of several new aqueducts, which brought clean water into the city. He even created laws to protect the rights of slaves and expand Roman citizenship to new people. All of these facts suggest that he was a gifted ruler with strong judgment, despite what may be found in histories written by his detractors.
Another reason for the hostility of ancient authors toward the reign of Claudius has to do with the fact that the writers were usually of senatorial class. Claudius was not elected to power by the Senate and severely limited its traditional powers during his reign. However, illustrating his wisdom, instead of entrusting high bureaucratic positions to senators, he preferred to give them to trustworthy slaves and former slaves (freedmen), whom he felt were more loyal to him. They worked efficiently, creating a bureaucratic framework for all future emperors. Claudius should be praised for giving political opportunities to new groups of people such as former slaves and even the women of the imperial household, including his wives.
The topic was about the importance of Claudius to the ancient Roman history and the author argued how Claudius ruled the Rome wisely and the span his reign to three continents.
The first point the author told us that Claudius was the most innovative, fair and wise emperor in Roman history. In spite of all his good deeds, the authors of ancient Rome's were against him because he was physically challenged and stutters when he talks. The professor counters this argument by saying; it was true that some ancient Roman authors betray him, books like IClaudius. Claudius physically challenged body and his stutters show the weakness of the empire.
The second point, the author presents, the major innovations had occurred in his ruling era. He built a new harbor and few aqueducts which were brought clean water to the Roman citizen. He conquered the island of Britain and incorporated with Roman Empire. He created laws for free slaves and expands new citizenship for new Roman peoples. The author said Claudius was the gifted ruler and had a strong judgment. The author also told ancient authors were against Claudius because he was not elected and authors were senatorial. He limited traditional power and distributed it among slaves and other trustworthy peoples. The professor counters this point by saying, though he did some good, like built aqueducts, but he was not a gifted ruler. He murdered his previous emperor. In case of, having a strong sense of strong judgment, he was a terrible judge for example sometimes he judged without hearing both sides. He conquered Britain because he wanted to show his power and destroy the denizens of Britain and enslaves them. It was true that slaves were loyal to him but most of them were corrupt ask for bribery to the peoples of Rome. Claudius was not completely with slaves, he actually likes gladiator game and killed many peoples for his pleasure.
The last point the author presented was, Claudius was praiseworthy because he gave the political opportunity to new peoples and imperial household like his wives. The professor counters by saying, he killed his previous emperor left Nero for his successor, who was the wort emperor of Roman history. And Claudius did not give any opportunity to the imperial household or to the slaves. Even his last wive, she killed him by giving him poison.
