Ethanol fuel, made from plants such as corn and sugar cane, has been advocated by some people as an alternative to gasoline in the United States. However, many critics argue that ethanol is not a good replacement for gasoline for several reasons.
First, the increased use of ethanol fuel would not help tosolve one of the biggest environmental problems caused by gasoline use: global warming. Like gasoline, ethanol releases carbon dioxide into the atmosphere when it is burned for fuel and carbon dioxide is greenhouse gas: it helps trap heat in the atmosphere. Thus, ethanol offers no environmental advantage over gasoline.
Second, the production of significant amounts of ethanol would dramatically reduce the amount of plants available for uses other fuel. For example, much of the corn now grown in the United States is used to feed farm animals such as cows and chickens. It is estimated that if ethanol were used to satisfy just 10 percent of the fuel needs in the United States, more than 60 percent of the corn currently grown in the united stated would have to be used to produce ethanol. If most of the corn were used to produce ethanol, a substantial source of food for animals would disappear.
Third, ethanol fuel will never be able to compete with gasoline on price. Although the prices of ethanol and gasoline for the consumer are currently about the same, this is only because of the help in the form of tax subsidies given to ethanol producers by the United States government. These tax subsidies have cost the United States government over $11 billion in the past 30 years. If the United States government were to stop helping producers in this way, the price of ethanol would increase greatly.
Both the reading passage and the lecturer debate the advantages of ethanol as an alternative to gasoline. While the reading passage does not believe ethanol could be a potential substitute for gasoline, the lecture agrees to the fact that ethanol is a future replacement for gasoline for the following reasons.
Firstly, the reading passage debates the effect of ethanol on global warming. It mentions that carbon dioxide released by ethanol when burned would trap heat in the atmosphere. Therefore, ethanol is no different from gasoline in causing global warming. On the other hand, the lecturer assures that ethanol reduces the effect of global warming. He highlighted that those plants used in ethanol, absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Therefore, counteracts the effect of carbon dioxide released by ethanol.
Secondly, the reading passage claims that using ethanol would affect the source of the main nutrients used by farm animals. For example, chickens and cows depend mainly on corn plants which is also the main source of ethanol production. Eventually, excessive ethanol production to meet the demand would have drastic effects on a substantial source of farm animals’ nutrients. Meanwhile, The lecturer highlighted that other parts of the plant could be used instead of corn itself. He further explained that ethanol production depends on cellulose that is abundant in other parts of the plant like stems and leaves. Thus, corn plants will provide food for farm animals and its other parts would be used for ethanol production. As you see, farm animals’ food will not be affected by ethanol production.
Lastly, the reading passage doubts the economic benefit of ethanol production on the long term. It states that ethanol is economically attractive only in the meantime but not in the future. Because the United States government enhances ethanol producers by subsiding tax and thus enhancing them to produce more ethanol. The author believes that this extra cost on the government will force it to eliminate the tax subsidies benefits which will adversely affect and increase the price of ethanol. However, the lecturer refutes this and focuses on the point that ethanol production will always be supported by the government. Thus, ethanol producers will produce more ethanol. Eventually, its price will go down.
