Expressionists
The reading passage was about abstract expressionism and the features of the paintings that fit to the description of it. The professor lectured about Jackson Pollock, who is known as one of the American greatest artists. He mentioned some of the characteristics of Pollock works, which was in accordance to the description of abstract expressionist paintings, provided by the reading.
The first characteristic of Pollock works is his mastery in creating a sense of movement and flow in his works. He put a large canvas on the floor and applied paints from all four directions to it; So that he could convey a message of activity to the observers. This is in agreement with the passage that indicates abstract expressionists have had an emphasis on the act of painting rather than the details of the objects.
The second one is that Pollock had improvised a method for splattering paint over the canvas. He held a brunch about one foot above the canvas and made paint drops on it. His specific method had led to his trademark drip. The passage also highlights that abstract expressionists gave especial attention to the surface quality of paint. They tried several methods to give unique and expressive characters to the paint itself.
The last thing is that Pollock used to paint on extra large canvases. He applied pain all over it and made twisted color patterns, while the canvas was laid down horizontally. The passage also states that abstract expressionists had a preference for large canvas. They put it on the ground to be capable of reaching all its corners
