Essay topics:

Genetic modification, a process used to change an organism’s genes and hence its characteristics, is now being used to improve trees through genetic modification. It is possible to create trees that produce more fruit, grow faster, or withstand adverse conditions. Planting genetically modified trees on a large scale promises to bring a number of benefits.

The author highlights the various advantages of applying genetic modification to trees. Meanwhile, the lecture refutes these advantages for the following reasons.
Firstly, the author claims that the trees will be hardier than native plants and would be able to survive harsh conditions. For example, in Hawaii, they were able to put an end to the problem of continuous damage of native tree populations by the ringspot virus. They solved the problem by genetically modifying the trees and evolved a pest-resistant species of papaya. However, the lecture debates the claim by mentioning that genetically modified trees are designed for certain changes but not diverse changes. Unlike native species that are naturally diverse and able to survive various changes even If some of the individuals couldn’t. the lecture emphasizes that if any climate change or any unusual change happened, the genetically modified trees will thus be wiped out.
Secondly, the author mentions that genetic modification of trees holds economic benefits to the farmers. Because the fruits in the farms will grow faster and hence, yields more fruit and food. On the contrary, the lecture debates its economic benefits. She implies the disadvantages of genetic modifications. For instance, it will cost more than pesticides. Also, the farmer is obliged by law to pay for the company every time he plants the seeds.
Finally, the author believes that genetic modification will contribute to meeting the demand for wood without endangering wild trees populations. Obviously, the lecture disagrees with the claim and assumes that the opposite will happen. What will happen is that genetically modified trees that are stronger and harder will outnumber the native species.
The lecture, therefore, finds the claims of the author invalid.
