The reading and the lecture both address about genetically modified trees. The author discusses the three advantage of the genetically modified trees. However, the lecture explains many problems and causes associated with planting the genetically modified trees

First of all, the author points out that genetically modified trees have more survival rate than natural trees. For example, genetically modified papaya trees solve the ringspot problems and increase their survival rate. The lecture challenges this point by explaining that genetically modified trees are resistant to the one environmental condition, but it is not necessary that they survive for a longer time. The lecture says that when the genetically modified trees are exposed to the different environmental condition, they can not survive and wipe out.

Secondly, the author states that the second advantage of the genetically modified trees is that they intend to grow fast so farmers can get more returns. The lecture rebuts this argument by mentioning that there are many hidden costs of the genetically modified trees. The lecture puts forth ideas that the farmers have to spend more money to buy genetically modified seeds compare to native trees. In addition to this, according to the law, the farmers should pay to the company every time when they plant its seeds.

Thirdly, the author contends that genetically modified trees protect the overexploitation of wild trees and save endangered trees. The lecture argues that the genetically modified trees grow aggressively and they compete with surrounding natural trees for the soil nutrients and water. Hence they affect the growth of the original trees.
