yellow

Essay topics:

yellow

The reading and the lecture both address about declination of the population of the yellow cedar, a species of tree that is common in northwestern North America. The author discusses the three reasons for the decrease of the yellow cedar. The lecture challenges all these points.

First of all, the author points out that insect parasite such as the cedar bark beetle was the causes of the yellow cedar's decline. The lecture challenges this point by explaining that the healthy yellow cedar is more resistance to the insect. The lecture mentions that it contains powerful chemicals which are poisonous to the beetle. Thus it is unlikely that cedars diminished by beetles.
Secondly, the author states that brown bears eat the yellow cedar because it has high sugar. So brown bears weaken the trees and they play an important role to decrease the population of the yellow cedar. The lecture rebuts this argument by explaining that yellow cedar trees decline in those areas where there were no brown bears exist. Therefore, this hypothesis is not true.

Lastly, the author contends that the third reason is climate changes. The author explains that climate changes have affected the root system of the yellow cedar since the yellow cedar trees were damaged by the freezing temperature. The lecture opposes this hypothesis by arguing that many damaged trees are located in the lower elevation which has warm temperature than in the higher elevation which has the freezing temperature.
