Humpback whales
Recently, there has been a ton of debate as to humpback whales. More specifically, in regard to the passage, the writer puts forth the idea that these whales migrate long distances as early humans sailors did; this navigating by following the stars. In the listening passage, the lecturer is quick to point out that although this sounds fascinating, there are indeed some flaws in the writer's claims. In fact, the professor believes that the evidence presented is not convincing enough to claim this, and addresses, in detail, the trouble with each point made in the reading text.
First and foremost, the author of the reading passage states that the humpbacks are intelligent enough to navigate using stars. The lecturer, however, stands in firm opposition to this claim; he states that there is no such a connection between these animals' intelligence and the way they navigate guided by the stars. He goes on to say that ducks are a good example of birds who navigate by the stars, but not specifically because they are intelligent, but more because they have evolved this ability to do so.
One group of scholars, represented by the writer, think that these whales migrate in straight lines. Of course, though, not all experts in this field believe this is accurate. Again the lecturer specifically addresses this point when he states that they are not particularly being oriented by an external object. They may have a biomagnatate in their brains, which causes them to navigate in straight lines. So it does not have to do anything with the stars.
Finally, the author wraps his argument by positing that humpback whales exhibit an unusual behavior known as spy-hopping, putting their head above the water, in order to look to the stars, Not surprisingly, the lecturer takes issue with this claim by contending that even if they may do spy-hopping, they do it also during the day where no stars are. To illustrate this, the lecturers use sharks, they use this behavior, but they do not migrate.
To sum up. it is clear that they will have trouble finding common ground on this issue as there is as the lecturer says a lot of speculation on this matter.
